El Bajo
Your Experience
Embark on an extraordinary underwater adventure at El Bajo Seamount, located about 8 miles (13 km) offshore from Los Islotes. This dramatic seamount features three distinct pinnacles rising from the depths, aligned over roughly 300 yards, with diveable depths ranging from 16 to 25 meters (52 to 83 feet). The central peak, with its broad, shallow plateau, serves as the primary dive site and offers ideal conditions for observing pelagic life.
El Bajo is world-renowned for one reason above all: hammerhead sharks. This site offers one of the most exhilarating opportunities anywhere to encounter schools of scalloped hammerheads (Scalloped Hammerhead Shark). These iconic predators can appear in groups ranging from a handful to hundreds, gliding effortlessly through the blue and circling the seamount in mesmerizing formations. Despite their powerful presence, they are typically calm and uninterested in divers, allowing for a truly awe-inspiring and peaceful observation of one of the ocean’s most sought-after species.
Beyond the hammerheads, El Bajo is a thriving pelagic hotspot. Large schools of amberjack and tuna move through the water column, while the reef itself hides octopus and the striking Panamic green moray eel. A nearby canyon is home to a remarkable aggregation of morays, adding even more excitement to the dive.
For those exploring the blue, additional encounters are always possible — from whale sharks to giant Pacific manta rays — making every dive unique. Designed for advanced divers, El Bajo Seamount is a true deep-water expedition, where the highlight is clear: an unforgettable face-to-face experience with the majestic hammerhead sharks in their natural, open-ocean environment.
